Context
To drive operation efficiencies in medical supplies management Guys and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust deployed 219 inventory management systems across all main clinical areas, from theatres to the ward. The systems now holds £7.9m of inventory and generates approximately 440 orders per day.
Challenges
- Reduce the level of inventory waste by identifying slow-moving/non-moving lines before they went out of date.
- Decrease the frequency of emergency orders to avoid unnecessary delivery charges and over-ordering.
- Minimise the time nurses spend on administrative tasks and searching for stock, allowing them to devote more time to face-to-face patient care.
Benefits
Extra nursing time released
With fewer emergency orders and faster picking times, thousands of hours of nursing time is released for clinical activities.
Reducing waste from expired stock
By reducing non-moving inventory by over a third, the levels of expired stock were reduced.
Lower PAR levels reducing costs
Inventory re-order levels are down by between 5% and 10% depending on the stock location.
Inventory Waste Reduction
With the implementation of the Omnicell Medical Supplies Management solution, nurses spend less time re-ordering and picking inventory, while stock levels and non-moving inventory are significantly reduced.

Time and Cost Savings
More Time with Patients
By cutting average picking time by 73% nurses are spending less time searching for stock and more time with patients.
Less Expired Stock
With more than a one-third reduction in non-moving inventory, the levels of expired stock have been reduced throughout the Trust.
Eliminate Time-Consuming Tasks
With better visibility over stock levels, nurses are spending less time arranging emergency orders and incurring delivery charges, as well as potentially over ordering items unknowingly already in stock.
